$200 bucks for 3 light bulbs? Hmmm... Well, all I can say is that if you are a techie and enjoy adjusting your environment (music, lighting, climate, etc) this is your gadget. One of the few things I have purchased that my wife is learning to use because she likes the impacts. The bulb over our infant in the kitchen gets a warm mellow glow while the 3 over her head get full blast energize. We have no regrets about buying the starter pack and 3 additional bulbs. It is not a need but if you can toss $300 bucks to the pile that is for having fun in life - get them. They perform well, software is great and got it working on three phones without issue. Even adding the extra bulbs was easy. Most fun I've had since the iPad came out.

Setup is easy. Setting the bulb control hub, connecting the bulbs, and getting them recognized by any IOS devices are all straight forward and deserve 5 stars alone. However, the hardware is no good without the app and the Philips free app really deserves no more than 2 stars.
Most disappointingly, if you set a schedule to turn a light or a set of lights to come on and turn off, that schedule will run each on and off command once. That is just ONCE, and to make setting the alarm more frustrating, the user must first select the scene alarm before it can be edited. By selected it, the bulbs in the scene come on.
Imagine, after lights out, you wanted to change the wake up time, or simply, reset it to run the next morning, by selecting the scene, you have just turned those lights on!!!! Wow, how crazy is that. And now, you are in the scene to edit it, you must CHANGE the schedule time. Let say it the schedule turned the lights on at 6am Monday morning, setting it to turn on again at 6am will NOT force the app to recognize a schedule has been entered, so you must tweak the entry and say make the new schedule for 6:01am.... With that, the app now knows a schedule has been set and allow the SAVE function. Wow, who uses wake up alarms like that.
So get it as a novelty and expect to be frustrated by the app. I have given up writing to Philips' tech support as many of my comments and requests for improvements have not been answered since it first came out ( I bought it the first week it went on sale at the Apple Store).
I don't know what Philips is waiting for before they will make the app fit for real world use, but i feel perhaps you can buy another $300 toy that gives you more fun.......

I received this product from my girlfriend for Christmas, and I have to say that it is the most reliable wifi enabled device I own. Since we've installed them, we have had zero issues with the connectivity. Another nice aspect of the design is that you can control them from your computer as well. You can also get involved in the Phillips Hue community, and sample other members' scenes, or even share your own. It's incredibly easy to install.
Another thing to mention is that the lights can either be turned on wirelessly or by a conventional switch. This is great if you want to put these in your overhead fixtures, but still want the convenience of switching them on and off without your phone handy -- yet still have the ability to change their colors when you do. Extremely handy for lamps, especially those in different rooms, or areas of your home. And because they work remotely, you can check the app to make sure you didn't leave the lights on when you're away.
Don't listen to the poor reviews about them being to expensive, or how easy it would be to do it yourself. The ease and quality of this product alone makes the purchase worth the price. Controlling the lighting from multiple devices is a breeze, and being LED technology, these bulbs should last for well over 50 years. If you like gadgets and can afford this product, the hours of fun you will have will completely out weigh the price tag.
