5Reliable, fast charging for my Volt
By Mark Rogers
I looked at Level 2 chargers quite a bit before deciding on the Leviton. I wanted to future-proof a bit, so I wanted a 32-amp charger (even though my current Chevy Volt- a great car- can only draw 16 amps). I also decided that I wanted a removable "plug-in" (as opposed to hard-wired) unit. That way, when my lease is up in 36 months, if I get an electric that can handle the full 32-amp charge (seems likely), I will not have to upgrade the charger. And since it is a "plug-in", I can also easily move the charger if I need to, or if I relocate myself. I also wanted a unit that could reset itself in case of a power interruption. Finally, Leviton is a trusted brand name, came with the SAE J1772 standard car connector I needed; has a great warranty, better documentation, and better availability (as of June, 2012) than most of the other units out there.

I was going to order the little brother of this charger (18-foot cable instead of 25-foot) and the installation kit from Amazon to take advantage of free, Prime shipping. Then I saw it would take up to a month to be delivered via Amazon. A MONTH? Too long for me.

I ended-up ordering directly from Leviton as it was in-stock for immediate shipment (per the web site) though a bit more expensive than the AZ price. Leviton also had free shipping, and threw-in the installation kit (about $80) for free (which would have to be purchased from AZ), so the final price difference was not that significant.

One day after ordering, I got a call and e-mail from Leviton saying that the unit with the 18-foot cable was out of stock, and would I accept the more expensive unit with the 25-foot cable instead- at no extra charge! Sure thing!! Great customer service!

It was delivered four days later by UPS. I had already picked out a spot for it on the small center wall between my two garage doors so it could easily reach either garage bay or either side of the driveway. I had an electrician run a 40-amp circuit over to that spot and install the outlet and cover provided in the installation kit. (Leviton says that their installation kit is required to maintain the UL listing approval for the unit. It must have to do with the plastic cover over the outlet that completely seals the plug and outlet from the immediate environment. The electrician thought it was a bit of overkill since the outlet is inside the garage. But it COULD possibly get wet or at least damp if the garage doors were opened in a bad rain or snow storm, so I was fine with paying for the kit complete with outlet, mounting bracket and cover).

The installation kit came with a large paper template which made it easy to locate the mounting bracket in the right spot (which is important, since the cable on the charger that has a very short- as required by the electrical code- cable with the plug on the end). Installation was a breeze- I had prepped an area of the wall with some extra lumber to support the bracket and outlet box. With a bit of measuring, and a few mini-lag bolts, the bracket was up an secure in a couple of minutes.

The charging unit easily slipped onto the bracket and tightened-down with a thumb screw to keep it secure. Then we plugged it and and tested- perfect! Once plugged into the car, you see the "Charging" indicator light on the charger light-up, and hear a solid "switch" flip inside the charging unit as the juice begins to flow. A moment later, the Volt charge light comes on and the horn chirps to let you know that all is well.

As promised Level 2 charging reduced the charge time needed for a a complete recharge by more than 50%- I can go from what the Volt registers as completely depleted batteries to a full charge in about 3.5 hours. Even a quick "top-off" charge for about 60-90 minutes gives me great range.

I have been using it for about a month now, and it has operated flawlessly. I am extremely pleased with the charger. The only thing I miss from the 110V trickle charger that came with the Volt is that the connector had a little LED light to assist when plugging-in the car in dim or dark conditions. But that is really an insignificant loss. The Leviton is easy to plug-in even without the light and has an easy "trigger" clamp to keep the plug secure. The Volt seemed to take to the new charger like a fish to water; absolutely zero compatibility issues and now charges in less than half the time than it did on the 110V standard wall outlet charger.

All 32-amp chargers are currently expensive- and the pay back will be slow- if it ever pays-back at all. But there is a major convenience factor to weigh-in if you have an EV. Being able to drive somewhere during the day, then charge, then go out again later in the day or evening is great. I love driving the Volt on battery as much as possible- that is what it was designed for. This charger helps me take full advantage of the car's battery power, and further reduces the amount of gas I will use.

There are other good residential units available from Schneider, SPX, GE and now Siemens. I can't really say how well they compare to this Leviton unit, which was a bit more expensive. I do know that the Leviton has the quality I was hoping for, has performed perfectly in its first month of use, and installed easily and securely.

I expect the prices on this and the other chargers will come down quite a bit as competition and production ramps-up. So if you can wait- or are willing to wait to save some money- then by all means, relax and wait and see if the prices become more reasonable.

But if you want the convenience- NOW - of MUCH faster charging, reliability, portability, then you can count on the fact that this Leviton unit will deliver the goods!

Stay charged!

5Great Charger
By MSM
This charger is very well built. Substantial metal case and quality materials. The cord is heavy-duty. It works great and charges my Ford Focus Electric up in about 2 hours. I drive about 50 miles per day.

The only weakness with this unit is the cable management. The "L" bracket is small and has no lip to help retain the cable on the bracket. I learned very quickly that cable management is an issue with a level 2 charger. The cable is heavy and inconvenient to coil. I am looking into a separate retractable system to handle the cable. This unit would be perfect if it came with a retractable cable.

5EVSE L2 32A 7.7kW Electric Vehicle Home Charger
By Dsinned
I agree with the last two reviews, and would like to add"

1. It comes with a full three year Leviton warranty.

2. The charging station is in a rugged, weatherproof, NEMA 4 steel enclosure.

3. It is 100% J1772 compliant and univerally compatible with ALL EVs that use this SAE Standard.

4. For $100 more, you get the 25' output cable (well worth it imho).

5. It has a very handy, integrated cable holder underneath the enclosure.

6. If you are knowledgeable around AC electric circuits, you can D-I-Y with Leviton's pre-wire installation kit.

7. It has a 12" input plug-in cord that meets the NEMA 6-50P standard.

8. With the pre-wire installation kit, as a "plug-in" charger, it is fully UL approved.

9. The enclosure is powder coated painited in an industrial looking gun metal gray.

10. It has three status LEDs, to indicate AC Power Available, Charging In-Progress, and Fault Detected.

Leviton makes a high quality product, easy to install, and that I believe is superior to other competiting products on the market. It can be used to charge a variety of major manufacturers' electric vehicles, although it does not support Tesla's Model S, the 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year winner. However, as the first reviewer mentioned, Leviton's EVB32 series works flawlessly with the Chevy Volt, which I can attest to as well. Plus, I also use it to charge my 212 Toyota RAV4 EV, which also works perfectly, even with a Li-ion battery pack designed by Tesla.

I highly recommend the Leviton EVB32 series home charging stations.
