This is the 289/FVF comob kit which inlcudes the the Fluke 289 meter, a pair of Fluke's silicone test leads, a pair of the standard "over the probe tip" aligator clips, a magnectic strap hanger, a second strap tension buckle style hanger, a standard (no frills) temperature probe, a USB adaptor, 289 PC software, an instruction manual, and a softside case for all of these accessories. The accessories are certainly worth the extra cost over the base meter if you're interested in PC interface (assuming you catch it on sale ~$550-$575.)
However you're not that interested in a bag of accessories... You're interested in a professional grade meter. So what sets this apart? This is obviously more than just a typical DMM. The large screen is the most notible difference. This gives this meter flexibility to show the user a plethera of useful information. Obviously this is a True RMS meter, but it's much more. It's a high resolution meter that can give voltage measurements to the hundreths of a volt in the 500V range. It can give measurements to the thousanths of a volt in the 50V range. With an optional ac or ac/dc amperage clamp the user can take current measurements with equally impressive resolutions. In addition there are several windows that give diagnostics such as "peak & valley" AC voltage (true peak + and - waveform voltage), real time min-max-average voltage, and time based data logging. The data logging is designed to record trends and patterns over a period of hours. This recording however is sampled several times a second to again provide the technition with a truly useful resolution. This logging feature can be shown graphically and saved in the meter's internal storge. Of course this can be exported to a PC as well. Beyond the rediculous voltage resolution, this meter also inlcudes features that make it useful to a wide range of industries and users. One powerful feature is a "LoZ Volts" range that has a much lower indenpendence as compared to the normal range. This helps eliminate "ghost voltages" created commonly when taking voltage from long runs of parallel circuits. In addition of course the user gets resistance, continuity, and all other traditional measurements found on other DMMs.
Now some pros and cons...
PROS:
-Incredible voltage resolution
-Powerful dianostic fields (unique to this class of meter)
-Windows are intuitively disgned for ease of traversing screen to screen
-Four "hot key" interface, four-way directional buttons, and a few other quick launch buttons as well as the dial selector keep the interface from becoming needlessly complex
-Time-voltage data logging
-Electrically isolated (by converting to optical connection) USB interface
-LoZ voltage range
-Two stage backlight
CONS:
-Battery life (it's not bad considering what's going on under the hood as this meter has many things in common with a computer. So using over long periods in data logging mode or using with backlight over extended periods can drain the batteries quite quickly.)
-No AC adaptor (This is certainly an improvement that could be made especially for static data logging.)
-No hardcase option. (When investing in a meter of this quality and cost, additional protection could be nice.)
